The Fear Street film series began development in October 1997 when Hollywood Pictures struck a deal to acquire the books, but no films materialized. In October 2015, 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment revived the project. By July 2017, the adaptation was announced as a trilogy directed by Leigh Janiak, who co-wrote the scripts with Phil Graziadei and others. The films were shot back-to-back in Georgia from March to September 2019, with a 106-day shoot. In April 2020, Chernin Entertainment ended its distribution deal with 20th Century and made a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix, which then distributed the trilogy as Netflix Original Films in July 2021.
